Cultural Routes for Sustainable Social and economic Development in Mediterranean
CROSSDEV is a 3-years project co-funded by the European Union through the ENI CBC MED programme. The project’s objective is contributing to the economic and social development in Mediterranean, strengthening and enhancing sustainable tourism practices, emphasizing common heritages and resources. Specifically, it expects to increase touristic competitiveness & attractiveness of less known destinations, rural/depressed areas, adopting/enhancing the Cultural Routes concept/experiences in selected areas of 4 countries:
- Italy: Sicily, communities in the areas along the Via Selinuntina, neighbourhoods of Sambuca di Sicilia (Province of Agrigento) and Castelvetrano-Selinunte (Province of Trapani)
- Jordan: communities around less known historical and cultural sites in Aqaba area (Southern Jordan) and archaeological site of Umm Qais (Northern Jordan)
- Lebanon: villages in the area of Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve, Mount Lebanon
- Palestine: :Palestine: the extended area of Palestinian Heritage Trail from Beit Mirsim to Battir – southern of the West Bank.
Expected changes:
Developing positive attitudes/practices in sustainable tourism enhancing the involvement and commitment of public authorities, actors of tourism-related sectors, educational institutions, civil society organizations, youth and the general public.
Expected results:
- Increased attractiveness of less known touristic destinations
- Increased diversification of tourism offering through the promotion of local and territorial assets/drivers in off season periods
Total budget: € 2,507,656
European Union contribution: € 2,256,890 (89,9% of the project’s total budget)

In constitution of the activity of CROSSDEV Cultural Routes for Sustainable Social and economic Development in Mediterranean -3 years’ project.
Palestinian Heritage Trail held three General meetings at local authorities’ buildings which aimed to introduced the new communities’ actors and stakeholders to the notion of community-based tourism; presenting CROSSDEV’s objectives and planned activities; However,
the first Public meeting was held in Beit Awaa south Hebron in the 3th of December 2019 in the presence of delegation of Hebron, The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Partners of PHT. Mayors and heads of the local authorities, Youth, women and touristic originations For each of Beit Mirsim , al Kom , Sikeh . Deir el Assal , Deir Samet ,”Beit Roush alfoqa ” and” Beit Rosh altahta
Dr Taleb Jubran the head of Antique at MOTA expressed that “Palestinian Heritage Trail is playing a leading role in Palestine, and he add say: we insist as Ministry of Tourism to attend such public meeting to strength the roll of PHT on Tourism map locally and internationally. “
Next to that the second general meeting took place in Battir village in the 5th of December 2019 which included Jaba’a , Hussan , Wad Fokeen and numbers of service providers , SMEs and our partners in Med Pearl Project” wild life society “funded by the European Union where they introduced their project where it crossed with PHT present project activities .
Third general meeting was held in Edna which involved each of Tarkomia , Sooreif , and Beit Ola and Edna ,In presence of Hebron Governorate , Ministry of tourism and Antique, Youth institutions From Sourif Municipality and Representatives of CISP Palestine.
In the end of those general meetingPHT has signed 15 cooperative agreements with the local authorities :seven Municipalities and eight Local councils where the new segment will pass by notably this segment will start from Beit Mirsim south Hebron to Battir west Bethlehem governances Therefore this segment long will reach 50 Km.
Ghaida’ Rahil the Project Manager reported ” that new segment will be around 50 km in length , this segment will take a major role in activating community based tourism in around 16 marginalised communities and will open new job opportunities for women and youth. therefore, it will work on developing these communities economically and socially.
next to that she expressed how happy she is for the communities Positive responding for the new idea , where they offered the fully willingness for helping and take an active role in activating the tourism in their villages and cities Which has a lot of tangible and intangible heritage and neglected historical sites that are not properly preserved, knowing that the project will work to promote and preserve the historical and cultural sites of the new communities , and the new segment of Palestine Heritage Trail from Beit Mirsim to Battir.”
